Decatur Book Festival

Considered the largest independent book festival in the country, there is everything from live music and free food/drink samples to meet & greets with authors and book signings. Not to mention an incredible supply of great books for great prices. Whether you need to stock up your library or just want to get out for a great day in the city, this is a must-attend event! Plus, Emory University is one of the sponsors of this event and will have several tables out advertising books and other works published by our professors. Also, the keynote address will pay tribute to the life and works of Pat Conroy, one of the greatest Southern authors of our time, who passed away recently. Free admission.
WRFG 31st Annual Labor Day Blues BBQ

Enjoy the live music and BBQ while supporting Atlanta’s only community radio station, WRFG. The entertainment comes with a great view, too, since Park Tavern is on the edge of Piedmont Park facing out over the Midtown skyline. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door (kids under 12 are free).
Taste of Soul

If you’re looking to experience the best there is to offer in Southern food, made by real Southerners, look no further than this popular food and music festival. It’s recommended that you bring an empty stomach and some aluminum foil (you’re going to want to take your extras home with you). There will also be live music from award-winning musicians and an artist market available throughout the day. Free admission.
Atlanta BeltLine Lantern Parade

This will be the sixth annual celebration of the Atlanta Beltline project. All members of the Atlanta community and anyone visiting with us that weekend are invited to create lanterns and march in a parade through the finished stretches of the beltline. Those who are feeling very ambitious can even join one of Lantern House’s workshops (details on website), buy a pre-printed lantern, or of course, make your own! This event will also mark the return of this fall’s Art on the Atlanta Beltline exhibition, which is the largest temporary public art exhibition in the Southeast. Free admission.
Atlanta Greek Festival
Greek Orthodox Cathedral, Friday, Sept. 23–Sunday, Sept. 25. atlantagreekfestival.org
As the website says, “your ticket becomes your passport” so you can see, listen and taste your way through Greece with the Atlanta Greek Community. Tickets are $5.
