From Admission Advisors: Advice on Making the Big Decision

Choosing a college is one of the most exciting, and sometimes overwhelming, decisions you’ll make. With so many options, it’s easy to focus on rankings, reputations, or advice from others. But at the heart of it, this journey is about discovering where you feel most at home. The right college isn’t necessarily the most prestigious one; it’s the place where you feel supported, challenged, and inspired to grow—both in the classroom and beyond. This is about more than academics; it’s about finding a community where you can be yourself and imagine the future you’re building. Hear from some of Emory’s Admission Advisors on their advice for making the big decision.
“It’s May 1st, or just about. Choosing Emory means choosing a community and a future that will transform you. It may mean a new home in Georgia, friendships with classmates from more than 80 countries, and the courage to explore disciplines you’ve never encountered before. You’ll learn alongside world-class scholars across the humanities, social sciences, life sciences, business, and nursing.
“You were selected because we see in you a rare capacity for growth, leadership, and meaningful contribution. To choose Emory is to join a community committed to serving humanity and to step into an experience that will reshape how you see the world and your place in it, for the better. Welcome to the Emory Class of 2030!”
– Mark Butt, Assistant Vice Provost, Executive Director of Admission

“What a whirlwind this season of life must be for you! As you consider your opportunities, I hope you’ll give yourself the space to approach each one with both an open mind and an open heart. Take the time to truly imagine yourself in each place! What your days might look like, the people you’ll meet, the moments that will shape you. Reach out to current students, faculty, and staff, and don’t be afraid to ask honest questions, not only about what you will learn, but how you will grow, be challenged, and be supported along the way. Wherever you choose, I hope it is a place where you feel seen, inspired, and at home. You’ve earned this moment!”
– Katie Palmer, Assistant Director of Admission
“While some students get a gut feeling that a place is right for them, many never do—and that’s okay. Keep in mind, there isn’t just one ‘right’ choice. Many colleges may check all of your boxes, but not all of them will allow you to fully show up as yourself while also challenging you to grow, both in and out of the classroom.
“Choose the place that allows you to be you and become more than you are today.”
– Travis Culver, Director of Admission, Oxford College
“As you make your decision on where it is you will call home for the next four years, I hope you remember that there were so many reasons why we are excited to invite you into our community! However, what’s most important right now is you and how you envision your college experience. Think about what excites you and ask current students, faculty, staff how that can be made possible. Then, once you make it there, make sure to take advantage of the wealth of resources and support at your fingertips. It is all there for you!”
– Laurine Kim, Admission Advisor

“It’s tough making decisions – and where you will spend 4 of your most formative years of life is a big one! Remember, there is no right or wrong answer. However, your college experience will help you grow into the adult you want to be, make friends and connections that will last a lifetime, and propel you towards the life you dreamed of.
“If you picture yourself lounging on idyllic green quads in front of marble buildings, connecting with peers who come from all around the world and help you understand different perspectives, and exploring all the excitement the city of Atlanta has to offer, Emory is the right place for you! Here, community, collaboration, and service to humanity are valued, and you will join a longstanding legacy of alumni who make a difference in this world. We look forward to welcoming you home in the fall, Class of 2030!”
– Irfa Hirani, Senior Assistant Dean of Admission
No matter where you end up, remember that this choice is just the beginning of your journey—not the end. Trust yourself, stay open, and know that you’re capable of creating something meaningful wherever you go.
